Stockholm Sports Facilities: Summer 2026 Infrastructure Test

Stockholm's sport facilities are carrying more load than at any point in the past decade. Three major renovation projects are running simultaneously across the city this summer, and the Swedish Football Association confirmed last week that Tele2 Arena in Johanneshov has been approved as a backup venue for the 2027 UEFA Women's Championship warm-up fixtures — a designation that brings both prestige and a hard infrastructure deadline of March 2027.

The timing matters because Stockholm's club calendar is crammed. Djurgårdens IF sit second in Allsvenskan after 13 rounds, drawing crowds averaging 18,400 to Tele2 Arena since May. AIK, playing out of Friends Arena in Solna, are five points back but have used the arena's new LED floodlighting system — installed in February at a cost of approximately 34 million kronor — to host three midweek evening fixtures that would previously have been logistically difficult. Both clubs are chasing resources at the same moment the city's Parks and Recreation Department, Idrottsförvaltningen, is trying to finish resurfacing work before August.

The Venues Doing the Heavy Lifting

Östermalms IP, the athletics and multi-sport facility on Lidingövägen, reopened its main track on June 28 after a seven-month refurbishment. The 400-metre surface is now World Athletics certified, which positions Stockholm to bid for Diamond League status at the annual invitational that Stockholms Friidrottsförbund holds each August. Capacity at the stadium is modest — around 8,500 — but the surrounding warm-up areas have been expanded by roughly 1,200 square metres, addressing a complaint that elite athletes had raised since at least 2022.

Further south, the Hammarby IF women's football squad has been training at the Södermalm artificial pitches near Tanto while their primary ground undergoes drainage work. The club's academy, running 14 age-group teams, has had to split sessions across three different postcodes for the past six weeks, a logistical headache that club administrators have pushed the city to resolve before the school-holiday surge in youth sport registrations hits in late July. Idrottsförvaltningen's summer budget for pitch maintenance across the city stands at 47 million kronor for 2026, up 11 percent from last year — but critics argue the increase barely keeps pace with the backlog from two winters of deferred work.

The indoor estate is also under pressure. Stockholm Waterfront and the Hovet arena on Hammarbybacken are both double-booked through most of July with a combination of esports events, handball tournaments and the tail end of the SHL off-season programming. Hovet's ice plant runs year-round and costs the city roughly 6.2 million kronor annually in electricity alone, a figure that has drawn scrutiny from councillors in Stadshuset following broader municipal budget discussions in May.

What Clubs and Fans Should Expect This Month

For supporters planning to attend fixtures, the practical picture is manageable but not seamless. Tele2 Arena's south stand concourse is partially closed until July 19 because of waterproofing repairs to the lower concourse deck — Gate 7 access is unaffected, but queuing times at the remaining entry points will be longer than usual. Tunnelbana services on the Green Line to Gullmarsplan remain the recommended approach; no parking expansion is planned before autumn.

Friends Arena in Solna has its own calendar complication: a Taylor Swift concert residency runs July 11–14, which means AIK's home match originally pencilled in for July 12 has been moved to Råsunda IP, the smaller historic ground in Solna that the club uses for reserve fixtures. Capacity there is just under 5,000, and AIK confirmed this week that the match will be all-ticket with no walk-up sales.

Idrottsförvaltningen is expected to publish its autumn facility allocation list by July 25, which will clarify booking priority for clubs running into the September crunch. Youth football associations in Bromma and Skärholmen have already submitted formal requests for additional floodlit pitch time, and the outcome of those applications will signal how seriously the city is treating the infrastructure gap that this summer has made impossible to ignore.
